Bye Bye Birdie

BYE BYE BIRDIE tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. The singer, Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, has a pompadour and thick sideburns; he wears gaudy gold costumes and speaks in a rugged voice. Albert Peterson, his agent, is a very pleasant mild mannered young man. Albert's faithful secretary Rose Alvarez keeps him and Birdie moving forward in the world.

Rosie concocts one final national publicity plan before Conrad's induction.  Conrad will bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss and it will be broadcast on the Ed Sullivan show. Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor.  The arrival of Birdie in Sweet Apple causes females of all ages to swoon.

This is a wonderful show and features a large cast of actors and a pit orchestra.  The songs include How Lovely to Be a Woman, A Mother Doesn’t Matter Anymore, A Lot of Livin’ to Do and Put on a Happy Face.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® DreamcoatJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat - This show is a musical parable of the Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors.  Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is blessed with prophetic dreams.  He is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt.  Joseph endures a series of adventures in which he is continually challenged.

When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command.  Eventually his brothers unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize.  After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a reconciliation of the sons of Israel.

This Old Testament tale is set to a variety of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll.  Some of the musical numbers are Poor Poor Joseph, One More Angel in Heaven, Close Every Door, Go Go Go Joseph, Those Canaan Days and Any Dream Will Do. The Good DoctorThe Good Doctor - This Broadway comedy is a composite of Neil Simon and Anton Chekhov.  This show is an entertaining comedy in which a writer shares with the audience various stories he has written.  The stories come alive on stage, beginning with the lowly army clerk who sneezes on his boss, a General, while they both happen to be attending the same opera.

In one sketch a harridan storms a bank and upbraids the manager for his gout and lack of money.  In another, a man visits the dentist for a toothache only to find the dentist’s assistant is the only one available to help ease his pain.  Next, a crafty seducer goes to work on a wedded woman, only to realize that the woman has been in command from the first.  There is also the classic comic tale of a man who offers to drown himself for three rubles.  The stories are droll, the portraits affectionate, the humor infectious and the fun unending.
