Creating a scholarship fund to give back to students who had been involved in our programs was a dream of ours for many years. In 2015, we were able to realize that dream, awarding 4 $250 scholarships to area high school seniors. As the program grows, we hope to expand the number and amount of scholarships awarded.
At the close of Things My Mother Taught Me, directed by Bob McKenzie, the theatre group presented him with a very heartfelt thank you. McKenzie recently retired from the board of directors and while the troupe hopes he will continue to be part of their future productions, they didn’t want the occasion to go unmarked or his many years of service to go un-thanked. He is the troupe’s longest continually serving board member, and was part of Vermillion Players for 45 of their 53 years.
In a small presentation at the close of the show, it was announced that Vermillion Players has re-named their scholarship from the Vermillion Players Scholarship to the Robert B. McKenzie Scholarship. In addition to his many years with Vermillion Players, McKenzie is a retired educator who was at PTHS for a number of years teaching English, Literature, Rhetoric, and foreign languages as well as directing the high school plays. They thought it only fitting to name the scholarship in his honor. Says current VP president Mary Jones, “Bob was an inspiration to me, always working to advance Vermillion Players, doing whatever it took to make sure we succeeded. We wouldn’t be the organization we are today if it weren’t for everything he did for us. Naming our scholarship in his honor, a scholarship he worked hard to establish and promote, seemed a very fitting gesture of our thanks and appreciation.”
The scholarship awards graduating high school seniors who have been involved in Vermillion Players during their high school careers, both on and off stage. Applications can be found in local high school guidance offices.
